Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at both ends of pitch

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
