Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
